** पतिव्रता स्त्रि **

किसी नगर में कौशिक नामक एक क्रोधी और निष्ठुर ब्राह्मण रहता था. उसे कोढ़ की बीमारी थी.

उसकी पत्नी शांडिली मां दुर्गा की बड़ी भक्त था. वह बड़ी पतिव्रता थी और कोढ़ से सड़े-गले पति को सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुरूष और पूजनीय समझती थी.

एक रात वह अपने पति को कंधे पर लादकर कहीं लेकर जा रही थी. रास्ते में कहीं माण्डव्य मुनि को उसके पैरों की ठोकर लग गई.

ऋषि क्रोधित हुए और शाप दे दिया.. मूर्ख, स्त्री तेरा पति सूर्योदय होते ही मर जाएगा.

ऋषि के शाप को सुनकर शांडिली बोली- महाराज, भूल से मेरे पति का पैर आपको लगा. जानबूझकर आपका अपमान नहीं किया. फिर भी आपने शाप दिया.

मैं शाप देती हूं कि जब तक मैं न कहूं तब तक सूर्य ही उदय न हो.

माण्डव्य आश्चर्य में पड़े खड़े थे. उन्होंने कहा- तुम इतनी बड़ी तपस्विनी हो कि सूर्य की गति को रोक सकती हो ?

शांडिनी बोली- मैं तो भगवती की शरणागत हूं, वही मेरे पतिव्रत धर्म की रक्षा करेंगी.

उसकी बात निष्फल नहीं रही. सूर्य अगली सुबह से लेकर दस दिन तक नहीं निकले. ब्रह्मांड संकट में आ गया.

देवताओं को बड़ी चिंता हुई. वे अनुसूया जी के पास पहुंचे. अनुसूया जी सबसे बड़ी पतिव्रता स्त्री थीं. उनका प्रभाव देवों से भी अधिक था.

देवों ने कहा- माता, एक पतिव्रता के प्रभाव के कारण संसार में संकट आ गया है. आपसे ज्यादा योग्य संसार में कोई और स्त्री नहीं होगी जो एक पतिव्रता शांडिली को समझाकर उसका क्रोध शांत कर सकें.

अनुसूया जी शांडिनी के पास पहुंची और उसके कारण उत्पन्न हुए संकट का प्रभाव बताकर वचन वापस लेने का अनुरोध किया.

अनुसूया जी ने कहा तुम्हारे पति की मृत्यु के बाद उन्हें फिर से जीवित और स्वस्थ करने का मैं वचन देती हूं.

शांडिनी को भरोसा हो गया. उसने अपना वचन वापस ले लिया और सूर्य की गति को की अनुमति दे दी.

सूर्योदय के साथ ही माण्डव्य के शाप के कारण उसका पति मर गया.

अनुसूया जी ने सूर्य का आह्वान करते हुए कहा- मेरे पतिव्रत में यदि शक्ति है तो आप इसे मृत पुरुष को पुनः जीवन, स्वास्थ्य और सौ वर्ष तक सुखद गृहस्थ जीवन का आशीर्वाद मिले.

माण्डव्य ने इसे अपने अहं का प्रश्न बना लिया और बोले- मेरे शाप को कोई काट नहीं सकता. इसे जीवित करने का प्रयास करना व्यर्थ है.

अनुसूया जी ने भगवती का स्मरण किया- माता मेरी लाज रखकर माण्डव्य का अहंकार चूर करें.

अनुसूया जी माता की स्तुति करने लगी. माता वहां प्रकट हुईं और कौशिक को जीवन औऱ स्वास्थ्य प्रदान किया. माण्डव्य का अहंकार समाप्त हो गया.

माण्डव्य बोले- आज मैंने दो पतिव्रता नारियों की शक्ति देख ली. पतिव्रता स्त्रियों में स्वयं भगवती का वास हो जाता है.

** Virtuous women **

There lived an angry and cruel Brahmin named Kaushik in a city. He had leprosy.

His wife Shandili was a great devotee of Maa Durga. She was very pious and considered her husband rotten by leprosy to be the best man and to be worshipped.

One night she was carrying her husband on his shoulder and taking him somewhere. Somewhere on the way, Mandavya Muni stumbled upon his feet.

The sage got angry and cursed.. Foolish woman, your husband will die as soon as sunrise.

On hearing the curse of the sage, Shandili said- Maharaj, by mistake you felt my husband's foot. Didn't intentionally insult you. Still you cursed.

I curse that the sun will not rise until I say so.

Mandavya stood in amazement. He said- You are such a great ascetic that you can stop the movement of the sun?

Shandini said - I am taking refuge in Bhagwati, she will protect my husband's religion.

His words were not in vain. The sun did not rise for ten days from the next morning. The universe is in peril.

The gods were worried. They reached Anusuya ji. Anusuya ji was the most virtuous woman. His influence was greater than that of the gods.

The gods said- Mother, due to the influence of a virtuous person, there has been a crisis in the world. There will be no other woman in the world more deserving than you, who can calm a virtuous man by explaining him politely.

Anusuya ji reached Shandini and requested to withdraw the promise by telling the effect of the crisis arising due to her.

Anusuya ji said that after the death of your husband, I promise to make him alive and healthy again.

Shandini was convinced. He took back his promise and allowed the motion of the sun.

With the sunrise, her husband died due to the curse of Mandavya.

Anusuya ji called upon the sun and said – If there is power in my husband, then you may bless the dead man with life, health and a happy household life for a hundred years.

Mandavya made it a question of his ego and said – no one can cut my curse. Trying to survive it is pointless.
